Nail biting and finger chewing is a form of body-focused repetitive behavior, found mostly in children. As young adults they usually grow out of it, if it is only a bad habit. However, some people continue to bite their fingernails into adulthood. Up to 50 per cent of children under the age of 18 are nail bitters. By age 22 only 25 per cent have a nail-biting problem.

Why is nail biting ‘bad’?
