When we say Better Skating, we are including a wide range of skates and skating styles. The chronology or evolution of skating started with ice skating as far back as 3000 years ago. Roller skating developed from ice skating in the 1700’s.  Then skateboarding developed from roller skating in the 1960’s. This in turn influenced snowboarding in the 1970’s.

Better Skating – Roller Skating;

Roller skating has been a popular recreational activity and sport since the 1880’s. It first appeared as far back as the mid 1700’s in vaudeville stage acts, perhaps to simulate ice skating?

Roller skating involves traveling over hard surfaces on skates. Roller skating is the gliding across a hard surface on wheels fixed to the bottom surface (sole) of shoes (skates). Today they utilise the hard surfaces of roads, walking paths, cycle paths or purpose-built skate parks.

Then in the 1980’s Marty McFly appeared skateboarding in the film Back to the Future films on a thing called a hover board. Everyone wanted one, yet until this day no such thing exists except in the movies. (Okay, there is an electric product called a Hoverboard but it still has wheels.)

Back to reality, skateboarding is an action sport which involves riding and performing tricks using a skateboard. In some ways, it is related to surfing more than roller skating.

Skateboarding is a diverse sport with different styles for different conditions and preferences:

  1. Street Skateboarding involves tricks performed on stairs, rails, ledges, and curbs. Street skaters master flip tricks, grinds, and slides.
  2. Vert Skateboarders ride in skatepark halfpipes or vertical ramps. They perform high-flying aerial tricks, spins, and grabs. 
  3. Park Skaters use skatepark bowls, ramps, and quarter pipes. 
  4. Freestyle Skaters emphasize fluid movements, and footwork over flat-ground tricks, spins, and manuals. 
  5. Cruising longboards or wider skateboards for relaxed, smooth cruising. 
  6. Slalom Skaters weave through cones with precision, agility, and quick turns in time trials.
  7. Pool Skaters carve and perform tricks in deep bowls, originally empty swimming pools.

Better Skating – Snowboards:

Snowboarding is not skating. It is not even skateboarding. It is not surfing. It is not snow skiing. Yet it was created and inspired by all of these to some extent in the 1970’s.

Skateboarding was the biggest influence on snowboarding, and I think many snowboarders also skateboard in the summer months. So, I have included it here.

The late former Winter Olympian Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin makes snowboarding look like some form of advanced hoverboarding.

Snowboarding is a recreational and competitive sport done by mostly descending a snow-covered slope and standing on a snowboard attached to a rider’s boots.

The popularity of the sport has grown exponentially with 7.61 million snowboarders in the United States alone, with 32 per cent female participation in 2020. The 18-to-24-year age group are the most common snowboarders.

My brother-in-law is aged in his mid 60’s. He has traded his downhill skis for a snow-board. So, the sport is open to various age groups.

Better Skating – Ice Skates;

Ice skating is the gliding across an ice surface on blades fixed to the bottom surface (sole) of shoes (skates).

All other forms of skating evolved from ice skating. It is estimated to have begun in Scandinavia somewhere around 3000 years ago as a practical means of transport.

The Dutch picked it up during the Middle Ages as a way to get around on the frozen canals, which criss-cross the Netherlands. From there its popularity spread across Europe to the world.

Today ice skating as morphed into various sports and activities.

Most people ice-skate for recreation. Ice skating for hockey, dance, form, and speed are highly competitive international sports.

The experience of skating on a natural frozen watercourse is very different from skating on a machine manicured ice rink. He appears to be wearing ‘touring’ or ‘ice hockey’ skates, which are far more appropriate than ‘figure’ skates in that environment.

Better Skating – Health Benefits

It can be daunting, even scary, to venture out on to the ice for the first time. Standing and balancing at the same time feels so foreign. Then as you try to move forward of course you naturally try to walk – and that usually ends in disaster.

Yes, you will fall over. The ice is hard so lean forward a little so that you will fall forward on to your face. It wont hurt as much as falling flat on your back and hitting your head on the ice. Don’t worry. Everyone ice skates for the first time and everyone falls over – many times. The good news is you will learn quickly, and before your first session is over you will be holding on to someone for dear life and making your way around the rink.

Those first few sessions are a great way to make new friends. You can learn from a few more experienced skaters. Then you can decide if you want to learn figure skating or hockey skating or speed skating.

Pine Lake-min. Welcome Better Skating

“Way back in 1976 I drove into Pine Lake in my Toyota Landcruiser to try skating on the frozen lake. We put on our cross country skis and made the short journey from the road to the edge of the lake (as seen in the photo above). My sister put on her ice skates and started skating about near the shoreline. I decided to explore the whole lake on cross country skis. I noticed that when I skied over the ‘dark ice’ I could hear it cracking behind me. Obviously, the dark areas were thin ice, so I kept to the thicker white ice areas. I later returned to my sister near the lake edge and put on my skates, but having been spoiled by manicured ice rinks I could not enjoy the rough frozen ‘waves’ on the lake surface. Eventually, we put on our skis and started off for the road. It was then I saw a dark patch near the edge of the lake so instead of prodding it with my ski poles I stupidly kicked off my skis and prodded the dark patch with my boot. Next thing I overbalanced and fell into the lake. I managed to find an unsteady foothold on a rock, which was rocking about unsteadily under my feet. The surrounding ice surface was up to my chest. I managed to lean over the ice and pull myself out.  Back at the four-wheel-drive, I changed into a dry set of clothes, and we enjoyed a thermos of hot soup before heading home.”
