With the advent of feminists lesbians were able to come out in force. In some countries, same-sex attracted women are still outcast and hide their identity. They may be forced by their family to unhappily marry a man to whom they may not be sexually attracted.
Some young men and women assume they are straight because they are raised in a culture that expects all young men and women to be straight. They may have some self-doubts, which are quickly suppressed. They marry and act as they think they are expected to perform until one day realizing they have betrayed themselves and their spouse. They realise they have been living a lie.

For that matter you can be romantically attracted to one woman and sexually attracted to another. I am going to leave you with that conundrum to sort out for yourself.
In the past, and in some countries, they had little choice but to continue the lie, while perhaps finding someone who understood their situation. Today in many countries girls can end the heterosexual relationship or romantic perhaps) marriage and change their presenting sexuality with greater acceptance and understanding. More and more countries now have legalised same-sex marriage. In time many more countries will follow.
Footnote; Rates of domestic violence are reported to be higher in lesbian relationships than gay male and heterosexual relationships, with the possible exception of some ethnic and aboriginal groups. The rate of breast cancer is higher in lesbians than straight women, perhaps because they are less likely to get check-ups? Lesbians are more likely to misuse drugs and alcohol than straight women. They are more likely to be obese, a risk factor for health conditions such as heart disease. All these factors are cancer risks.

While I have known some who have thrown a ‘coming out party’ to make the announcement, others have left it as a ‘need to know’ only basis. Leaving others to work it out for themselves. It is a personal choice, and it depends on individual circumstances.
If you are unsure how someone who is important in your life will react to you telling them you are lesbian, try ‘testing the waters’ by asking them what they think about other lesbians.
You can:
- Ask them if they personally know any lesbians?
- Ask their opinions about famous and celebrity lesbians?
- Ask them what they think about same-sex marriage and lesbians who have children.
Through these discussions you will be able to determine if they are generally positive or negative about lesbians. Do not expect them to be gushing with positivity about everything and everyone. Ultimately you want to determine how they might react and if they will support you.
Don’t be surprised if they already know and have just been waiting for you to say something.
Many people who come out as gay and lesbian are accepted by their loved ones, but not all are. So be prepared. Talk to other lesbians about their experiences.
