Professor Vadim Gladyshev of Harvard Medical School and a team from Duke University measured changes in biological age in mice and humans as a result of stressful situations.
Writing in the journal Cell Metabolism the researchers said “Our data revealed the dynamic nature of biological age – stress and anxiety can trigger a rapid increase in biological age. This can be reversed.”
Their research showed that those wanting to turn back the hands of biological age can do so in a matter of months, weeks or even days.
Cortisol is one of the ‘fight or flight’ stress hormones naturally produced in the adrenal glands. It assists us to deal with life challenges.
If we perceive something as a threat, either real or imagined, cortisol is released into the body. It causes our blood vessels to constrict, our heart to beat faster and muscles to tense in response to perceived danger, in readiness the runaway. Cortisol and adrenaline, another stress hormone, act as stimulants to help us with extra energy when it most needed for survival.
Cortisol and adrenaline are known as stress hormones. They have an important survival role to play. However, too much too often can cause damage to our physical and mental health.
When stress hormones are released because of fear and panic the immune system shuts down important processes as the body prepares to flee. Repeated triggering of these stress hormones through anxious thinking causes more anxiety and possible panic attacks. Excessive cortisol therefore exacerbates existing anxiety disorders. Worse still, Cortisol is an anti-inflammatory hormone which if imbalanced in our metabolism through the continued experience of excessive stress and anxiety can result in widespread inflammation. This can result in various Immune disorders such as Fibromyalgia and Raynauds syndrome, and perhaps digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
